Russia and China Relationship



 Since the early 2000s, Russia and China have been strengthening their relationship. In 2014, they held joint military exercises for the first time and have continued to do so annually. The two countries have also been working together economically, with China investing in Russian infrastructure and energy projects.


There are a number of reasons why Russia and China are drawn to each other. Both countries are large, populous, and resource-rich. They are also both permanent members of the UN Security Council and have veto power, which gives them a lot of influence in international affairs.


There are some challenges to the Russia-China relationship, however. The two countries have different ideologies (China is communist while Russia is not), and they sometimes compete for influence in the same regions (such as Central Asia). They also have a history of border disputes.

One of the most significant gas deals between Russia and China was signed in 2014, when Russia’s state-owned gas company Gazprom agreed to supply China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) with 38 billion cubic metres of gas per year for 30 years. The gas will be transported via the ‘Power of Siberia’ pipeline, which is currently under construction and is due to be completed in 2019.


This deal is part of a wider trend of increased energy cooperation between Russia and China. In 2017, the two countries signed a number of agreements on oil and gas exploration and production, as well as on the construction of energy infrastructure.
