Aaron Rodgers college number
Rodgers wore No. 8 at California before becoming an NFL first-round pick, and he's now returning to the single-digits 19 years later.
While Rodgers has a storied history with No. 12, he didn't have any reason for adopting the number after he was drafted in 2005. Veteran kicker Ryan Longwell wore No. 8 for the Packers at the time, so Rodgers accepted the No. 12 that he was given.
2005 was Longwell's final season in Green Bay, but Rodgers stuck with No. 12 all the way until the trade to New York.
Rodgers wore No. 4 at the junior college level before landing at California. No. 4 is currently worn by Jets CB D.J. Reed, while No. 8 became open when New York traded Elijah Moore to the Browns earlier in the offseason.
Asked on "The Pat McAfee Show" in March whether he would accept Namath's offer, Rodgers said, "There'll be time to talk about that down the road" and added that he appreciated the proposal.
Rodgers has had a few weeks to consider his options while the Packers and Jets slowly hammered out a deal, and he ultimately decided to keep Namath's No. 12 in the rafters at MetLife Stadium.
Aaron Rodgers Jets jersey number
Rodgers is expected to wear No. 8 with the Jets, according to ESPN.
While Namath's retired number might be what prevented Rodgers from choosing No. 12, Broadway Joe himself did give Rodgers the all-clear if he wanted to wear the number.
"Yeah, I want him to wear his number. We established ourselves and we've got a real respect for our numbers, and Aaron Rodgers, God almighty, yeah! It'd be great to have him in New York," Namath said during a January radio appearance.
Aaron Rodgers made his intention to play for the Jets crystal clear in March, and a deal is finally done nearly six weeks later.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Jets and Packers have agreed to a blockbuster deal that ends the months-long saga and sends Rodgers to New York.
Speculation about Rodgers' jersey number began as soon as he announced he wanted to play for the Jets. Rodgers' No. 12, which he wore for all 18 seasons in Green Bay, is retired by the Jets for Joe Namath. Would Rodgers try to join Namath and wear his No. 12, or would he be forced to go in a different direction?
Here's what we know about Rodgers' new jersey number now that a deal is finally in place.
