Tesla is introducing a comprehensively revised generation of its Model 3 mid-size sedan, which was launched six years ago. A version with rear-wheel drive and the “long-range” model with all-wheel drive and the longest range in the series are offered.
“The revisions bring more sophistication, comfort and premium quality – inside and out. “Nevertheless, the Model 3 remains true to its elegant design aesthetic with its clean lines,” said Tesla.
On the outside, the manufacturer advertises better aerodynamics for more range and reduced wind noise, new front headlights and new taillights with "super bright" colors and an updated tailgate-integrated design. There are two new paint finishes: “Ultra Red” and “Stealth Grey”. In addition, rims and tires optimized for range are installed. The latter should also be quieter.
The steering wheel levers are replaced by haptic switches as well as physical buttons. As with the latest Model S and Model X, the "Smart Shift" control automatically selects the correct direction of travel for launch. The "super bright and responsive" 15.4-inch touchscreen in the center of the cockpit is the same size as before, but provides more usable real estate thanks to a narrower bezel. Cellular performance has improved by 50 percent, according to Tesla.
The center console is redesigned with aluminum trim, more storage space and two wireless charging docks for mobile phones. Laptops and mobile devices can be charged with one front and two rear USB-C charging ports, each with up to 65 W of power.
The Model 3 upgrade starts in Germany at 42,990 euros before state subsidies and is therefore 1000 euros more expensive. Depending on the rims selected, the basic model covers 513 to 554 kilometers per charge according to the WLTP standard, accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds and further to a speed of 201. The higher-priced version also costs 1000 euros more and is available from 51,990 euros available. This model with an additional electric motor at the front for all-wheel drive enables a range of 629 to 678 kilometers, the sprint to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 201 km/h.
The previously available sports version is initially not part of the program. Deliveries of the rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions of the Model 3 are scheduled to begin in Europe in late October.
The new audio system developed by Tesla is intended to provide studio-quality sound at every seat. In the all-wheel drive vehicles it includes 17 speakers, two subwoofers and two amplifiers. The audio system of the rear-wheel drive versions has nine speakers, a subwoofer and an amplifier. Additional microphones are intended to ensure improved sound quality during telephone conversations. The new 8-inch rear display integrates controls for the air conditioning, ventilation and audio/video system.
Tesla promises a “whisper-quiet interior”. The company explains: "Thanks to 360° acoustic glazing, improved suspension bushings, seals and sound-absorbing materials, the interior is quieter than ever."
There is also a revised, upgraded interior. “The cocoon-like interior pampers with high-quality materials (real aluminum, textile fabric, etc.) and a fine finish,” it says. The equipment includes customizable ambient lighting, ventilated front seats with seat fans and heated seats in all other seats.
